Matt Trethric

Lifetime of Competition

From swimming and sailing to cycling, Matt Trethric has been a lifelong athlete. Growing up in California, he transitioned from the waters of San Francisco Bay to the hills of Marin County, where he rediscovered his competitive drive on the bike.

After co-founding a successful construction company, Trethric returned to racing with renewed passion. In 2023, at age 65, he captured the U.S. Masters National Road Race Championship (65+) in Augusta, Georgia, breaking away on the final climb to take gold.

Trethric credits the camaraderie and support of the Hammer Masters team—and Hammer Nutrition’s products—for his success, calling it “the best team I’ve ever been a part of.”

I grew up in the Sacramento area where I began swimming competitively at age 6 with my 3 older brothers. At age 14 my family moved to Sausalito, California where I began sailing on the San Francisco bay and learned to competitively sail lasers. This progressed into racing keel boats of all sizes on the bay and in the Ocean.

In the 1980’s I began riding mountain bikes in Marin County and thoroughly enjoyed the off road adventures. This progressed into riding on the road where I began to compete in the early 1990’s. My time for riding became limited in 1994 when my wife, Marcia and I opened up our construction company.

In 2010 I found bicycling again and enjoyed group rides with Marin Velo Club around Marin County. With more riding I was able to drop 40 pounds and began racing in cyclocross and road. Racing more on road and cross, I joined various teams.

Then I found the best team, Hammer Nutrition 53/11 by chance when I met Hunter Zeising around 2016. With the support of Hammer and Hunter I pushed harder and learned more about tactics and team racing. Also, the Hammer products are the best along with the greatest team!

Turning age 65 in 2023, I wanted to participate the USA Nationals at Augusta, Georgia. I trained more than usual for this race. During the end of the last lap, I was able to break away with another rider with 4K to go. At 1K from the finish, which was an uphill finish I was able to gap the other rider and won 1st place in the Nationals RR, 65 field. What a rush. It was extremely helpful to have the Hammer team and products throughout this event. I’m also thankful in having my teammate, Rob Knock there to help.

I thank Hammer Nutrition and Hunter Zeising for their continued support.
