Why is iodine in Appestat? Is it safe to use Appestat if I have a thyroid condition and am on a thyroid medication?

The thyroid gland uses iodine to make the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Each capsule of Appestat contains 113 mcg of kelp-derived iodine, which helps convert body fat into energy by increasing basal metabolic rate (BMR) via the thyroid gland.

Thyroid medication and iodine and/or kelp (iodine supplements are usually derived from kelp) should not be taken together—unless given the approval by your physician—as iodine excess may result.
