Resolve: Skip the Sugar!

Looking for a powerful and realistic resolution for the new year?

Eat less sugar! Americans reportedly eat more than 150 pounds of sugar per year on average. Athletes who consume sugary products in training can easily double this amount. These are alarming numbers, especially as sugar is a leading contributor to all of the epidemic diseases we face as a nation.

Don't be hoodwinked into thinking that it's OK to consume sugar because you are an athlete. No one gets a free pass. To avoid the serious health consequences of excess sugar, aim for a more reasonable intake of 20 pounds per year. Avoid sugar-laden beverages and check labels for sugar content. Anything from a package or can should contain less than 20% of total carbohydrate calories from sugar, including and especially sports products.

One example of the harmful impacts of sugar comes from a recent finding in the American Journal of Public Health. In a recently published study involving 5,300 men and women, drinking a single 20-oz. serving of soda daily was associated with nearly 5 years of added aging!

The research reveled a link between drinking sugar-sweetened sodas and shorter telomeres within white blood cells. Previous research had shown a link between the length of telomeres within white blood cells and human lifespan. There are so many long-term and short-term benefits of reducing one's sugar intake.

Sound impossible? It's not! A new study funded by the National Institutes of Health confirms that reducing levels of sugar in the diet can drastically improve health in just 10 days. You can do it!

Give your health and athletic performance a dramatic boost by cutting out the sugar in your diet and sports fuels.
